1 〔見えない所を手で探ること〕 groping; feeling about with one's hands.

～する grope [fumble, feel] (around) 《for [after]…》; feel about with one's hands.

●電灯のスイッチを手探りで探す grope [feel] for the light switch

・暗闇を手探りで歩く feel [grope] one's way in the dark

・手探りで歩きまわる grope one's way around

・手探りで非常口にたどり着いた. I felt [groped] my way to the emergency exit.

・灯火管制の間は何でも手探りでしなければならなかった. During a (wartime) blackout we had to feel around for everything.

・目をつむって手探りで箱の中身が何か当ててください. Close your eyes and try to guess what's in the box by touch [touching it].
